When our Superintendent/President isn't running the college, he's taking a vacation to run a marathon! Congratulations to Shasta College Superintendent/President Dr. Frank Nigro on finishing the Tokyo Marathon—one of the six prestigious World Marathon Majors (the others are Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, and London)! A true Shasta Knight, Dr. Nigro took on the challenge with grit, determination, and style sporting a college green running shirt emblazoned with the SC logo as he tackled the 26.2-mile (42.2K) journey.
After 10 years of trying, Dr. Nigro finally secured a spot in the race through the lottery system—which only accepts about 11% of applicants. The event, featuring 38,000 runners, began near Shinjuku Station—the busiest train station in the world—and finished by the Imperial Palace. The Tokyo Marathon was Dr. Nigro's first international marathon but it was not his first international race. He's also competed in a half marathon and 10K in Japan, and 10Ks in the UK and Austria. Despite battling injuries and enduring what might have been the hottest Tokyo Marathon on record, he persevered, crossing the finish line in what was his 20th marathon since 2005. Dr. Nigro took up running in his 30's alongside his wife (an accomplished runner in her own right) and tries to do one marathon a year
. Reflecting on the race, Dr. Nigro shared what a "great experience" it was. He expressed his admiration for the thousands of volunteers and spectators who made the experience so memorable. He also met runners known as "Star Chasers"—those who complete all six Marathon Majors to earn a special medal. Please join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement! 🎉🏅
